PetsMatter: Periodontal Disease in Dogs

Have you ever gotten your dog’s teeth cleaned?

I grew up with dogs and we never did this. I once gave 60 lb mutt- Fresca a Dentabone and that was the extent of it. That thing got the tartar off her back teeth well and she had a nice mouth of teeth. But, I have to agree with their concern over toy breeds. They go crooked and keep getting tartar along the gum line. I grew up with a Pekingese and now that I’m older, I have a pekingese mix of my own. Her name is Lila.

Lila’s teeth were awful. You go towards the back of her mouth and the tartar was so bad that you didn’t even see a tooth there. It looked like something you would see in a troll’s mouth. I paid $600 last year for her to have pre-surgical bloodwork, general anesthesia, 6 extractions and a cleaning. One tooth was broken. A year later her mouth is half as bad as it was last year, but it’s still a recurring problem.

Brush their teeth.

Really?
Are you serious?

I’m lucky my dog trusts me enough to go towards her mouth with this and then I go after her with this
